NOMIS Awardee Svante Pääbo has been awarded the 2021 Massry Prize for the Discovery of Ancient DNA and has been elected foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
Pääbo shared the Massry Prize with two other outstanding scientists, David Reich and Liran Carmel, all of whom made discoveries that have shed new light on the origins of humans, in some cases overturning previous assumptions.
The Meira and Shaul G. Massry Foundation established the Massry Prize in 1996 to recognize outstanding contributions to the biomedical sciences and the advancement of health. Founded by Dr. Shaul Massry, professor emeritus of medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, the nonprofit foundation promotes education and research in nephrology, physiology, and related fields.
Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei
Pääbo was also elected foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome, Italy. The Accademia dei Lincei, founded in 1603 by Federico Cesi, is the oldest scientific academy in the world; Galileo Galilei is counted among its first partners.
