Public Space Democracy (PublicDemoS)

NOMIS Research Project

Public space is the place for the assembly of people, the empowerment of persons. It is the hub of democracy as well as the manifestation of state power. The Public Space Democracy (PublicDemoS) project explores the ways in which new forms of public agency extend politics to everyday life experiences, opening up avenues of artistic expressions and aesthetic forms. The core aim of this project is to renew democratic agendas through politics of performative citizenship and public making in multicultural settings. PublicDemoS emphasizes the necessity to revisit and rethink “democracy” through the public place in our contemporary societies.

The project is being led by Nilüfer Göle at the L’ École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). Regular updates are published on the project website.
