NOMIS–ISTA Pioneer Award

NOMIS Partnership

The NOMIS–ISTA Pioneer Award is a new model for innovation designed to support bold blue-sky research — fundamental, curiosity-driven inquiry that has the power to transform scientific knowledge. Established in partnership with the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), the award strives to be a benchmark for modern science funding by placing people at its core.

Groundbreaking discoveries that benefit humanity often start with daring ideas that challenge established scientific dogmas. However, this kind of high-risk, high-reward inquiry requires freedom, resources and a supportive environment — a rare combination in today’s research landscape. The NOMIS–ISTA Pioneer Award fills that gap, empowering exceptional researchers to take risks and reject artificial boundaries.

The Pioneer Award supports innovation by investing in the potential of people, recognizing that game-changing scientific progress and discoveries arise from the creativity and drive of exceptional minds. The program is inclusive, flexible and open to all disciplines and research groups at ISTA, providing faculty with the freedom to pursue ideas that might not be funded by traditional mechanisms.

Harnessing ISTA’s profile as a vibrant hub where collaboration surpasses departmental constraints, the program encourages creative research methods that connect scientific fields. Through this integrative, curiosity-driven approach, the NOMIS–ISTA Pioneer Award fosters cutting-edge research with the potential to redefine entire disciplines and generate significant scientific breakthroughs.
