Dean Knox and Geoffrey Supran have been awarded the 2021 NOMIS & Science Young Explorer Award. Launched earlier this year by the NOMIS Foundation and Science/AAAS, the prize recognizes outstanding research performed by the applicant as described in a 1,000-word essay. Knox receives the grand prize, and Supran is the finalist. The inaugural Young Explorer Award will be presented at a ceremony in New York, US, in May 2022.
Knox’s research develops statistical methods for analyzing imperfect social science data and is described in his essay “Revealing racial bias.” He is an assistant professor at the Operations, Information and Decisions Department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, US.
Supran’s research focuses on the quantitative historical analysis of climate change disinformation and propaganda by fossil fuel interests; it is described in his essay “Fueling their own climate narrative.” He is a research fellow in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University in Cambridge, US, and also Director of Climate Accountability Communication at the Climate Science Social Network.
